Measurement

How to measure AI Visibility

You cannot improve what you do not measure, and AI Visibility is not measured by rank alone. It is measured by repeated prompts, competitor comparison, and a careful read of how the answer frames your brand.

Answer first

How do you measure AI Visibility?

Fix a prompt set for your category, run it across the assistants your buyers use, and track five things: mention rate, share of voice, accuracy, intent coverage and framing.

The key is comparability. If the prompts, assistants and competitors keep changing, you do not have a measurement system. You have anecdotes.

Metrics

The five measurements that matter first

Mention rate

In what share of relevant prompts does your brand appear at all?

Share of voice

How often are you named relative to your chosen competitors across the same prompt set?

Accuracy

Does the assistant describe your product, buyer, category and limitations correctly?

Intent coverage

Do you appear for the specific jobs you want to own, not just for your company name?

Framing

What role are you given in the answer: default pick, enterprise choice, niche option, budget option, or afterthought?

Prompt set

Build the test around real user questions

A good prompt set mirrors the language buyers actually use when they ask an assistant for help.

  • -Category definition prompts such as 'What is AI Visibility?'
  • -Pain prompts such as 'Why does ChatGPT recommend our competitor instead of us?'
  • -Solution prompts such as 'How do I get recommended by AI?'
  • -Commercial prompts such as 'AI Visibility audit' or 'who offers AI Visibility audits?'

Keep the first version small and stable. Twenty to forty prompts is enough to establish a baseline if they cover the major buying intents in your category.

Method

How to run the measurement so it stays comparable

  1. 01

Choose the assistants your buyers are most likely to use.

  2. 02

Run the same prompts across each assistant in one measurement round.

  3. 03

Record named competitors, not just your own appearance.

  4. 04

Store answer excerpts and a short qualitative note on framing.

  5. 05

Repeat on a fixed cadence so changes in visibility are real, not random.

Scorecard

What the tracking sheet should contain

FieldWhy it matters
PromptThe exact wording tested, stored so future runs are comparable.
AssistantChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI answers, or another system you care about.
Named brandsEvery brand mentioned, in order if the answer implies one.
Your statusNot mentioned, mentioned, cited as source, or recommended directly.
Framing noteA one-line read of how your brand was positioned.

Interpretation

What the numbers do and do not tell you

Important

Measurement tells you whether you appear, how often and in what role. It does not, by itself, explain why. For that you still have to read the answers and inspect the evidence behind them.

That is why AI Visibility measurement sits halfway between analytics and research. The scoreboard matters, but the reasoning matters too. Once you have the baseline, the next question is how to get recommended by AI.
